Showbak A lonely reminder of former Crusader glory is Showbak Castle, less than an hour north of Petra. Once called “Mont Real,” Showbak dates from the same turbulent period as Karak. It is perched on the side of a mountain, with a grand sweep of fruit trees below. The castle’s exterior is impressive, with a foreboding gate and encircling triple wall. Despite the precautions of its builder, the fortress fell to Saladin only 75 years after it was raised. Inscriptions by his proud successors appear on the castle wall. Perched on a splendid hilltop overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee, Umm Qays boasts impressive ancient remains, such as the stunning black basalt theatre, the basilica and adjacent courtyard strewn with nicely carved black sarcophagi, the colonnaded main street and a side street lined with shops, an underground mausoleum, two baths, a nymphaeum, a city gate and the faint outlines of what was a massive hippodrome. Pella Tabqit Fahl Pella is exceptionally rich in antiquities, some of which are exceedingly old. Besides the excavated ruins from the Graeco-Roman period, Pella offers visitors the opportunity to see the remains of Chalcolithic settlement from the 4th millennium BC, evidence of Bronze and Iron Age walled cities, Byzantine churches, early Islamic residential quarters and a small medieval mosque.
History Index The hounds in those days cannot have been anything like the gentle giants we know today because, when they were turned loose at night to protect homes and herds, their owners had to ensure that all guests were safely indoors as the hounds would ferociously attack strangers. He guarded my life and my honour, a valued servant, my hound, taken from me. He was shield and shelter for our goods and herds. He guarded all our beasts, at home or out in the field.

While some – such as the Loch Ness Monster and Jack the Ripper – are globally famous, others have remained more obscure. And although many of the mysteries have been written off as perfectly natural happenings, none has ever been comprehensively solved or debunked. The probe was started after three students reported concerns to their lecturer when they returned from a work placement. A nurse and two nursing assistants from the Lockhart Unit, based in Stonehouse Hospital, Lanarkshire, have been suspended.
The whistleblowing trainees, from the University of West of Scotland, claimed life-saving drugs were not administered properly by qualified staff. They also alleged that patients were left dehydrated and not supplied with enough water to drink. The students have also claimed that nursing staff mishandled patients and treated them roughly.

It was a very popular object of hunting among ancient Romans and Greeks. If it was a subspecies in its own right, rather than a small number of aberrantly coloured individuals, it has been extinct since A less likely identity is a natural leopard-lion hybrid commonly known as a leopon. Why is John Barrowman gay? On a quest to find out about his sexuality Torchwood star John Barrowman has known he was gay since he was nine. But was he born that way or did his upbringing have something to do with it? I was in the closet for three hours once in It was dark, uncomfortable, and really cramped. Plus, I was convinced I wasn’t alone a crumpled jacket lurking in the corner looked pretty dangerous. I was five and my brother, Andrew, then 10, and my sister, Carole, 13, had shoved me into the coat closet because, well, really for absolutely no good reason.
I mean what baby brother has ever annoyed his siblings to the point of needing to be locked up or tied down? This story still gets a laugh from my nieces and nephews. Depending on who’s doing the telling, Uncle John was either locked up for 30 fleeting minutes or for three long, tortuous, oxygen-starved hours. As simple as the story is I think it’s an apt metaphor for the way I’ve chosen to live my life – openly, honestly, with no regrets.
And, whenever I can, I try to confront the monsters in the dark.
